ATTRACTIONS IN PATAGONIA

Austral Road
AUSTRAL ROAD

The Austral Road is a tourist destination in itself, as it offers a journey through the most attractive landscapes of Chilean Patagonia, passing by the Andes, rivers, lakes, forests, millennial glaciers, fjords and channels which allow the traveler to discover places of extraordinary beauty. This starts in Puerto Montt and culminates in Villa O’Higgins, near the Southern Ice Field, after stretching more than 1,240 kilometers breaking through landscapes of mountains and forests which possess ancient coigües, notros and lengas.

Punta Arenas
PUNTA ARENAS

Punta Arenas is the southernmost continental city in the world and it represents a port for the booming bioceanic traffic. This is evident in the streets and squares of this neat city. Its main attractions include the Mayorino Borgatello Salesian Museum, the Shepherds Monument, the Patagonia Institute, the Municipal Theater, Muñoz Gamero Square with its sculpture commemorating the discovery of the Strait of Magellan by Ferdinand Magellan among other architectural works.

Magdalena Island
MAGDALENA ISLAND

Magdalena Island is home to the largest penguin colony in Chile (200.000). Its inhabitants are known for their formal plumage and somewhat clumsy waddle. The island is located 35 km from Punta Arenas, and the boat ride generally takes about 30 minutes. From November to early April, the penguins can be found breeding and molting for the summer. After their young have grown and they've changed their plumage, they go in search of warmer waters.

Penguin colony at Seno Otway
PENGUIN COLONY AT SENO OTWAY

65 km from Punta Arenas on the Seno Otway, between the months of October to March, we can find colonies of Magellan penguins, there they hatch and rear their chicks. In this sector are designed trails where you can walk along the coast to move about 2 kms to find an outdoor nature museum and appreciate the lives of these helpless birds in their natural environment. In the tour we will also see flocks of ibis, ostriches and wild geese.

Puerto Natales
PUERTO NATALES

Puerto Natales is located 247 km. from Punta Arenas. From the gentle slope where it is located, one can see the Riesco Mountain Range, the Paine Massif, and the Southern Ice Field glaciers. As regards tourist infraestructure, there are cafés, restaurants, a casino, small picturesque shops, a Town Museum, and travel agencies. As regards hotels, there are big ones as well as small guest houses with customized service.

Milodon cave
MYLODON CAVE

The Mylodon Cave is a must-see for tourists staying in Puerto Natales, which is just 24 km away. Take a snapshot of yourself in a fierce struggle with this mythical creature or perhaps giving him a bear hug. The paleontological appeal of this National Monument, whose history began with the discovery of its almost completely intact remains in 1896, is as much an attraction as the scenic beauty of Torres del Paine.

Torres del Paine
TORRES DEL PAINE

The main attraction of this National Park is its famous mountains. You will be pleasantly surprised by its hiking trails, which will take you through forests and by waterfalls and lakes with fantastic views of the snow capped Southern Ice Field. Another one of the park's attractions is the chance to photograph native fauna. The animals are not afraid of humans, so you can get close enough to take photos of guanacos, ñandúes, foxes, huemuls and, with a lot of luck, pumas.

Serrano and Balmaceda glaciers
BALMACEDA & SERRANO GLACIERS

The Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers are located inside Bernardo O’Higgins National Park, which is located 31 miles to the Northwest of Puerto Natales and it is part of the Andean mountain range. Visiting the park is the meaning of a wonderful place, untouched by humans. Its access is only by boat, sailing through the Ultima Esperanza Fiord. Its name is owed for being the “Last hope” to find the Strait of Magellan in 1557, for a expedition that came from the Pacific Ocean.
