ATTRACTIONS IN ALTIPLANO CHILE

Arica
ARICA

The city of Arica is known as Chile's "Northern Port" and the "City of Eternal Spring." The average temperature during its coldest season is 15ºC. The city receives no more than 0.4 mm of rain a year. Part of the appeal of this northern city is its hotels, casino and nightlife. Its beaches are the best in Chile, and thanks to its warm waters and variety of swells, you can surf and even swim at night.

Azapa Valley
AZAPA VALLEY

This valley produces tropical fruit, olives and flowers. San Miguel de Azapa, located about 13 km from Arica, invites you to spend a peaceful day in a desert valley. On route you will be able to visit the geoglyphs area and pucará of San Lorenzo. Other attractions include the San Miguel de Azapa Museum where you will find 10,000-year-old relics of the Chinchorro culture, which predated the Inca.

Putre
PUTRE

Putre is located 125 km from Arica in the foothills of the Cordillera Occidental about 3.550 mt above sea level. While the place was inhabited before the Spanish planned the present town in 1580, there are no pukaras or traces of settlements of importance. Some of its buildings date back to the 17th century, for example, the town's church was built in 1670. Putre is a good place to try local dishes such as llama meat and papa chuño, which are especially delicious with goat cheese.

Parinacota
PARINACOTA

Parinacota is located about 181 km east of Arica and just 42 km from Putre, which sits at 4,392 mt above sea level. The stone church, a National Monument that dates back to the 17th century, is a clear example of the town's resistance to the harsh climate and offers a glimpse into the local culture. Parinacota is located inside Lauca National Park, which is famous for its breathtaking scenery, snow capped peaks like Pomerape and Sajama.

Surire Salt Flat
SURIRE SALT FLAT

The Surire Salt Flat sits 4,245 meters above sea level and forms part of Lauca National Park. It has an extension of 14858 hectares and its lagoons and wetlands are home to the ñandú, the bird for which the salt flats are named (it is called "suri" in Aymara), as well as Chilean, Andean and James's flamingoes. The temperature here ranges from 5ºC during the day and -15ºC at night.

LAUCA NATIONAL PARK

With a surface area of 137,883 ha (303,342 acres), this park is well-known for being home to a great wealth of flora and fauna, its highly interesting culture and history, and sites of uncultivated beauty. More than 130 different bird species live in this park, in addition to the distinctive vicuñas, vizcachas, and condors. A major attraction of the park is the Lake Chungará, one of the highest lakes in the world, located at the foot of the Payachata twin volcanoes.

CODPA VALLEY

This is the place to drop off the grid, literally, as few electronic signals make it here. If you're someone who is never left to get any peace even while on vacation, spend a few days in Codpa. Codpa is surrounded by interesting ravines and hot springs that you can explore by bicycle. You'll find good lodging year round complete with tour services.
